Guinea Pigs and Kids

Guinea pigs and children are a lot alike. Small, curious and social. Everyone on the Gillie Team had a pet guinea pig when they were little kids. We know from experience they can be the best of friends. But as Marshmallow Puff always says, “It’s better to be safe than sorry.” We always want to make sure everyone is safe and responsible.

Adult Supervision

Even with all their similarities, we don’t ever recommend leaving kids and guinea pigs alone together. Not because we think they might plan for world domination, but because someone can get hurt. Guinea pigs are fragile, and young kids are still learning to be gentle… and to not put their fingers in animals’ mouths. Yes, guinea pigs are still animals and they do have teeth. This is why an adult should always be present when kids and guinea pigs play together.

Holding Your Guinea Pig

With guinea pigs being so small and round, we understand that most kids can view them as if they are one of their stuffed toys. Which sometimes means they think they can carry their guinea pig friend like they do their teddy bear. It’s not a surprise that we say this is a big no, no. But not all is lost, we can learn the right way to carry your guinea pig, with an adult’s assistance of course. It will take a lot of practice, but it will happen over time.

Playing with Your Guinea Pig

Guinea pigs love to play and figure out puzzles. They are not like dogs, so you have to play gently with them. For some play ideas check out our post about Guinea Pig Activities.
